She appears in the Munro cemetery records as Margaret Schemmerhorn [sic, Schermerhorn]. Her will and probate records show that James Doyle was granted guardianship of Margaret, who died at his home. JUSTICE AT LAST.
Mrs. Margaret Schermerhorn, For Ten Years in the Poorhouse, Gets A Pension And $1,000 Back Pay.

Some ten or twelve years ago John Schermerhorn, an old farmer living in Munro Township, died, leaving an aged wife. After some time, the old lady found it impossible to run the farm, and having no children or, apparently, relatives, she decided to deed the farm to the county and go to the county house to live, where she could be sure of a good home and care as long as she lived. All these years she has lived there in peace, quiet, resigned, and cheerful. John Schermerhorn, the husband, was an old soldier, who enlisted from Kansas City, Ks., and Capt. Bouchard, who is ever on the lookout for a chance to help the old soldiers, their widows and orphans, finally took up the matter of securing a pension dating from 1890 and carrying $8 a month and back pay to the amount of over $1,000. As the old lady is over 80 years of age, this $1,000 and $8 per month should be ample to care for her at some charitable home for old ladies, and an effort will be made to send her to such an institution as soon as possible.

A CENTURY ON EARTH
Passing of Margaret Schemmerhorn [sic] Removes Centurian

The death of Mrs. Margaret Schemmerhorn [sic], which occurred at the home of James Doyle, on the east side last Saturday evening, in all probability removed the oldest resident of the city, as Mrs. Schemmerhorn was one hundred and one years old.
It is not definitely known when Mrs. Schemmerhorn, or Fagan, which was her maiden name, came to this country, but it must have been a good many years ago, as her husband, who died in this county over twenty years ago, was a veteran of the Civil War. She was born near Cork, Ireland, in 1813.
After the death of her husband, having no means of support, she gave her small farm, near Carp Lake, to Cheboygan county and went to live at the county house. After going there she made several attempts to secure a pension, which she was told she was entitled to, being the widow of a veteran of the Civil War, but she could give no enlightenment regarding what regiment her husband was with, further than that he was s horseman in a Kansas or Michigan regiment. Several lawyers and pension agents made efforts to secure her a pension, but the pension department was unable to grant it owing to the meager intelligence she was able to give them, until the matter was presentee to Captain E. A. Bouchard, who made an appeal to President McKinley, whose kindly heart prompted him to personally intercede in the matter, with the result that a special representative of the department was sent here to investigate, with the result that it was found her husband had been a member of the 14th [sic, 16th] Kansas Cavalry and had served with distinction and honor through the war, and in a very short time she was in possession of one thousand dollars back pension and eight dollars a month, which latter amount was increased to twelve dollars a month, when the widow's pension bill was passed.
Before her pension was received she came to live at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bouchard, where she remained a year, when Mr. Bouchard went before the Probate Judge and had James Doyle appointed her guardian, and with whom she has since lived, and where she received the best of care up to the time of her death.
No known relatives exist except a step-son*, who lives in Florida.
The funeral was held Tuesday from St. Mary's church, Rev. Fr. Webeler officiating. The remains were interred in Calvary cemetery.
