Frank enlisted from Iowa City as a Private in Company "K", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 4 August 1862, and served throughout the 1863 Vicksburg and 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaigns. After being mustered out with the Regiment in Savannah on 25 July 1865, he returned to farming in Johnson County.
He married Mary Eveline Eels on 15 December 1866, and they had at least six children: John, Frank, Lon, Etta, Mary and Lilly.
