John Strope,who had been taken into captivity with his wife and children, returned with them to Wysox soon after the close of war. He was known as "Big John Strope" - a man of large frame and indomitable will - and while a captive suffered the persecutions of his tormentors like a martyre.
When he returned his person showed the scars and callosities made by the tortures he endured.
In 1790, his family consisted of himself, his wife, one son, Isaac, and three daughters.
