Justus Gaylord was among the early settlers of Wyoming, having moved there with his family from Norwich, CT. He became interested in Connecticut lands and purchased certain rights in Springfield. Two of his sons, Ambrose and Justus, came in 1776 and occupied these lands, Indian Meadows, remaining until 1777, when they joined the Continental Army and served with distinction until the close of the war.

In 1785, Justus Jr, returned to Wyalusing, and in 1792, purchased 900 acres of land on the north side of Wyalusing Creek, to which he removed and remained until his death.

Ambrose settled at Black Walnut.

Justus Gaylord Sr came to Wyalusing after the war and remained there until his death of his wife in 1814, when he went to Ohio and lived with his son, Elihu.
