Seth Godwin was born in North Carolina, Nov. 13, 1787; was born again Aug. 19, 1824, at which time he joined the Methodist Church, and lived therein a consistent Christian until his death, Sept. 27, 1876. Father Godwin was one of the links which united us to the past. He immigrated to Tennessee in 1817; married Miss Nancy M. Vestal in 1820, with whom he lived until 1870, at which time she died in peace. He married again to Mrs. Amanda Gallop, in 1873, who survives to mourn with his children his death. The name of Godwin is a synonym of Methodism, at least so far as I know, all the family being members, and most of them, officers in the Methodist Church. Father Godwin was deeply pious, and at almost every conversation contrived to say something about religion. He was not ashamed of his Master, and, though timid and shrinking, he was powerful in prayer. I hardly ever heard him pray in public, but some in the congregation were moved to tears. But he is gone. We shall miss his counsels and prayers, but loss is his eternal gain. Though he died suddenly, his consistent life and constant trust in the Saviour, leave behind the testimony that he is at rest. This removal but places a beacon-light upon the headlands of glory to urge his children, already on the way, and surviving companion, to press on to meet him. May God bless and bring them all together at last. -- J. E. Beck.
