Grant was born July 3, 1920, in Shelley, Idaho as the sixth of ten children of Ephraim Franklin Hanks and Leah Elizabeth Jensen. He grew up in Shelley and attended Shelley High School.
After high school, Grant joined the Navy (Dec. 1941 - Oct. 1945) and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II aboard the USS YMS-90, a Yard class Minesweeper, and USS Nashville (CL-43), a Brooklyn class cruiser. He participated in seven invasions of the Marshall, Philippine and Gilbert Islands and Guam.
On December 31, 1945, Grant married Elaine Stephens in Salt Lake City, UT, after a three-month courtship. Grant and Elaine built their life together in Rexburg, ID where they raised three children and operated Grant’s Jewelry for 33 years.
In 1977, they retired to spend their winters in Mesa, AZ and summers in Island Park, ID before moving to Boise in 2004 to be closer to family. As an avid fly fisherman, Grant was happiest fishing on the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River in Box Canyon, though the time he most cherished was spent with his family.
Grant was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 59 years, Elaine Hanks; his parents; and eight of his siblings, six sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his three children, Cathie (Mike) Mickelsen of Boise, Stephen Grant (Debra) Hanks of Eagle and Julie (Kelly) Summers of Rexburg; a brother, Reed Hanks of Meridian; along with ten grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held.
