"John Baird died of paralysis at his home, 506 Twenty-third street at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, aged 58 years, 9 months and 17 days. He had been in poor health most of the winter, but his condition was not considered serious until a week ago. He was born in Enterprise, Bedford county and the early years of his life were spent in Hollidaysburg where he learned the trade of coach painting under his father, the late Simon Baird of that place. After the death of his father he was employed in the Pennsylvania railroad shops at Pitcairn, but five years later resigned to go into business on his own account in this city. He opened a shop on Eighth avenue, near Twenty-third street, where his skill and proficiency in his calling soon won an extensive and profitable patronage. He was married in 1868 to Miss Lizzie Wilson of Hollidaysburg, who survives him. He is also survived by one brother, Mr. Daniel Baird, and three sisters, Mrs. Sue Carpenter, Mrs. Amanda Moss and Mrs. Jennie Barr, all of this city. He was a member of the Simpson Methodist Episcopal church, Hollidaysburg lodge of Odd Fellows, the Ridgeley Protective Association, and the Artisans' Order of Mutual Protection. The funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 o'clock, in the Simpson Methodist Episcopal church. Interment in the Lutheran cemetery at Hollidaysburg."
