Rozena M. Leaven was born on Tuesday; October 7, 1913 near Walford, in Benton County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John E. and Susan J. (Kleistch) Zieser. She attended the Benton County Country Schools until 8th grade. On Wednesday; April 18, 1934 she was united into marriage to Lawrence J. Leaven in the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spencer's Grove; Benton County, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Walford and Independence; Buchanan County, Iowa area until moving into Independence in 1960. Rozena was employed as a cook for the West Village Care Center and later as a housekeeper with the Pinicon Hotel, Peoples Memorial Hospital and the Mental Health Institute in Independence. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the St. John's Rosary Society. Rozena M. (Zieser) Leaven , 87, of Independence, passed away Saturday; February 17, 2001, at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence following a short illness. Those left to mourn her passing are seven children, Doris (Dave) Gosse of Vinton; Benton County, Iowa. Kenneth (Janice) Leaven of Newhall; Benton County, Iowa. Donna Mae McQueen of Wheatland; Platte County, Wyoming. Larry (Shirley) Leaven of Independence, Ronald (Janet) Leaven of Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa. Connie (Dave) Higgins of Independence, Mike (Jane) Leaven of Independence. Twenty-six grandchildren and Thirty-nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Susan J. (Kleitsch) Zieser; her husband, Lawrence Leaven in 1995; three brothers, Joseph, Harold and Vernon Zieser. May they rest in peace. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating and Amy Kimball and Michelle Leaven as lectors. Music was provided by Linda Leaven and Tim Leonard, soloist and the St. John's Choir accompanied by Mrs. Diane Brimmer, organist. Burial was held in the Saint John's Catholic Cemetery in Independence with grandsons, Keven Leaven, James Gosse, Mike Leaven, Mark McQueen, Dan Higgins and Michelle Leaven serving as casket bearers.
