AUSTIN -- Brenda Newman Canul, 53, went to be with her Lord on November 6, 2006, after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 5, 1953 in Newport, RI, to Peggy and Homer Newman.

Brenda grew up in Abilene, TX., and was baptized at Crescent Heights Baptist Church. She graduated from AHS in 1971 and was employed at Arrow Ford and Baack Florist.

Several years later she moved to Austin, TX and started a floral wedding business that was later recognized as one of the top 10 in Austin. She met and married her beloved husband Rudy in 1990. She decided to make a career change and joined the staff at the Texas Association of School Boards.

Brenda was preceded in death by her father Homer Newman. She is survived by her husband Rudy and children, Christopher, Patrick and Carley. She is also survived by her mother, Peggy Newman of Abilene; brother Robert Newman, his wife, Karen and sons, Clay and David from Wichita Falls, TX.

She is also survived by Rudy's mother, Pila Canul; brother-in-law, Eddie Canul; sisters-in-law, Melva Viera, Roberta Canul and Diana Cantu, all of Brownsville.

Rudy and Brenda had numerous faithful and devoted friends who supported them and enriched their lives. We have all been blessed to have had Brenda touch our lives with her positive, outgoing nature and creativity. She was truly a beautiful, gifted person that brought happiness, a caring smile, and loving friendship to her family and friends.

The family will receive guests from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
