Agnes was born on May 16, 1928 in Greenwich Village, New York City, the youngest of eight. Her family, like many who struggled through the Depression, was always close and looked at life with humor and courage.
During high school, she corresponded with a family friend, James Giglio, who had joined the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. It didn’t take long for them to know that they were meant for each other. Shortly after her graduation from high school and Jim’s discharge from the Navy, they married in 1946 and remained devoted sweethearts through 67 years of marriage.
During the early years of their marriage, James and Agnes resided in Brooklyn, New York where their first two children were born. They then moved to New Jersey, where they lived for 49 years. Agnes enjoyed pursuing her interests in gardening, sewing, crafts and antiques. Agnes got her greatest joy from raising their five children and actively participating in the lives of her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She had a special way with children and was never too busy to stop what she was doing to play games with them or hear the silliest joke.
For many years, Agnes and Jim enjoyed hosting birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinners, family reunions, St. Patrick’s Day parties and various other celebrations for their extended family and friends. Their home was filled with laughter and warmth.
Agnes worked for Eastern Airlines in Woodbridge, NJ for 25 years as a reservations agent. She had close friendships with many of her co-workers with whom she stayed in touch after her retirement. Her career at Eastern provided an opportunity to expand her interest in travel. She and Jim enjoyed numerous adventures throughout the United States and abroad, including a wonderful family reunion cruise to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
In 2004 Agnes and Jim left the cold winters of New Jersey behind and relocated to El Granada, California to be close to their west coast children and grandchildren. She continued the tradition of hosting Thanksgiving and their California home was the scene of many happy gatherings.
Agnes had a wonderful sense of humor and lived her life with great optimism. She had a gift for making each person she knew feel special and touched many lives in her quiet, gentle way. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband, James, her sister, Florence, her children, John (Anita), Susan (Jim), Carol (Joe), Mary-Anne (Brian), and Martha (Gene), as well as her grandchildren, Jessica (Dan), Matt, Jamie (Jon), Dan, Paige, Lia, Sarah, James and Rachel, her great-grandchildren, Eva and Charlotte, and numerous nieces and nephews.
If there is one thing that Agnes would have wanted to change in her life it would have been to spare, Jim, the love of her life, from suffering from Alzheimer’s. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Agnes would be greatly appreciated by her family. You can make a donation online by going to http://act.alz.org/goto/Agnes_Giglio.
