Mary Spruill McClain, 82, of Windsor died Wednesday, June 1 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

Born March 25, 1934 in Washington County she was the daughter of the late John Latham Spruill and Cora Lee Spruill and was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Paul Davenport, Sr. and Dale Everett McClain; daughters, Tina M. McClain and Mary J. McClain; grandsons, Joseph McClain and Tyler Squires; brothers, John W. Spruill, Haywood Eli Spruill and Latham A. Spruill; sisters, Matilda A. Ayers and Ida B. Goodman. Mr. McClain was a retired cosmetologist and member of Scuppernong Church of Christ.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda M. Manning of Pantego; sons, Joe Paul Davenport, Jr. and wife, Ellen and Michael L. Davenport of Windsor and Toby E. McClain of Plymouth; brother, Charles F. Spruill of Roper; sisters, Evelyn Grace Rhodes and Betty L. Christenberry of Plymouth and Stella L. Brickhouse of Roper; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was planned for Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Scuppernong Church of Christ with Cleve Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery...
