Funeral services for Mrs. Denver Smith, of rural Big Stone, were conducted Friday at the First English Lutheran church in Ortonville. Mrs. Smith died at her farm home Tuesday evening of a heart attack. She had been enjoying her usual health until the attack came on late in the afternoon of that day.

Mrs. Smith had suffered a heart attack two years previously from which she recovered after a period of hospitalization at Eitel hospital, Minneapolis. At the time of her death, she was 54 years and one and a half months of age.

Born in Nebraska on June 20, 1898, Mrs. Smith, nee Matilda Fredrichsen, was the daughter of August and Marie Catherine (Johannsen) Fredrichsen. She came to South Dakota with her parents in 1902, when they settled on a farm near Big Stone. She married Denver Smith on September 23, 1919. They have always resided on farms in the Big Stone community.

Mrs. Smith was a confirmed member of the First English Lutheran church of Ortonville and was active in church work and in the Ladies Aid until the time of her death.

She leaves to mourn her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Arvilla) Bergseth, of rural Ortonville; Mrs. Leo (Darlene) Barnhardt, of rural Big Stone, and Janet, at home; one son, Cpl. Aaron Smith, serving with the forces in Germany, and four grandchildren, Ethel and Judy Bergseth, and Roger and Sandra Barnhardt.

Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Anna Schultz, Miss Alma Fredrichsen, and Mrs. William (Rose) Darrington, of Milbank, and Miss Mary Fredrichsen, of Big Stone, and five brothers, Herman Fredrichsen, of Milbank, and Frank, Albert, Martin and Fred Fredrichsen, all of Big Stone. One brother, Nicolas, passed away in January, 1950.

The funeral was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Amon Johnson. Interment was made in the Greenwood cemetery at Big Stone City. The pallbearers were four of her brothers, Herman, Albert, Frank and Martin, and two brothers-in-law, Christ Diedrichsen, of Ortonville, and Theodore Warner, of Corona.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Warner and family of Meihart, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Clair Young and family of Watertown; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Fenhaus, of Wilmot; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Johanson, of Lyle, MN; Mr. and Mrs. August Johanson, and Amanda Christensen, of Albert Lea, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Warner, of Corona; and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barnhardt, of Waubay.
