James Atkinson
James Edward "Ed" Atkinson, 84, 518 S. Main St., Danville, formerly of West Burlington, died at 550 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1913, in Phillipsburg, Mo., he was the son of William H. and Mary Alice Ledbetter Atkinson. On Oct. 31, 1936, he married Inez Askew in Phillipsburg.
Mr. Atkinson was a tool and die maker. He had worked for Northwestern Cabinet Co. in Burlington, Campbell Chain in West Burlington and retired from Heatilator of Mount Pleasant in 1974.
During World War II, he worked at shipyards in Portland, Ore. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and tinkering with small engines.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Crear of Lebanon, Mo., and Connie Glasgow of Danville; two sons, Gary Atkinson of Burlington and Rick Atkinson of Danville; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will begin after noon Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 830 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Atkinson will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.
A memorial has been established for Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson.
