07 MAR 2022 SAC to add full first and middle name, move JESS to nickname field.~JESS BAILEY, 92, of Lawton, Oklahoma, died Saturday, October 28, 2006, in the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Wilburton, Okla., with the Rev. Doug Miller, pastor, First Baptist Church of Wilburton, and Rev. Dale Rogers, Director of Missions, San Bois Association, officiating.
Burial will be in the A.L. Stephens Cemetery in Clayton, Okla., under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Lawton.
He was born in Dunbar, Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, on June 28, 1914, to Jesse and Eva Sigler Bailey. Jess was an educator whose first teaching assignment was at Nine Pine School near Clayton, and whose career spanned 46 years. He was superintendent of schools at Clayton for 16 years and finished his teaching career as professor of political science and history at Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton.
After his retirement, he was employed as the public relations officer at the Wilburton State Bank. He then retired at the age of 82, to work in his garden and grow vegetables, which he shared with his neighbors. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Wilburton and was a 32nd degree Mason. Truly a member of Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation," he served his country during World War II and returned home to marry another veteran, June Elizabeth Smith in Greenwood, Ark. on January 25, 1947. She died August 5, 1998 in Lawton.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jesse and Karen Bailey of Lawton; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and former State Senator, the Honorable Billy Mickle of Durant, Okla.; two grandsons who were the pride of his life, Matt Bailey Mickle and Jake Jesse Bailey.
He is preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Orbin and Arthur Bailey; and two sisters, Clydia German and Viola Cox.
