Lewis Donald Atkins, age 86, died Sunday, December 15, 2013, at his residence in Columbus. Services will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Brownlee officiating. Burial with U.S. Army Honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday December 17, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Atkins family home, 3200 Highway 50 East, Columbus, MS 39702; and again one hour prior to service at the church. Mr. Atkins was born on December 24, 1926, in Liberty, AL to the late Lewis Dewitt and Ada Key Youngblood Atkins. He was a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church, and a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He was a retired employee of A&P Grocery Store and a farmer. He spent his days gardening and working in the flowerbeds with his wife. And he also loved cookouts and family gatherings. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Gracie Ann Speed Atkins, Columbus, MS; daughters, Cynthia Ann Atkins Poole (Jim), Cocoa, FL, Paula Sue Atkins Ashcraft Beard, Columbus, MS and Patricia Lane Atkins Mathis (Stan), Columbus, MS; son, Mike Atkins (Kathie), Columbus, MS; brother, Orman Atkins (Agnes), Shreveport, LA; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Pallbearers will be Todd Poole, Kevin Blizard, Alex Burnett, Jermaine Burnett, Max Atkins and Billy Ashcraft. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Leroy Howell and his staff.
