REFORM | A celebration of the life of James Orman Atkins who passed away November 2, 2014 in
Shreveport, La. at his daughter's home will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Reform First United Methodist Church with son-in-law, Rev. Steve Caraway and Rev. Woody Woodin officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhill Memorial Gardens with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born on October 27, 1928 and raised in Pickens County, Orman worked for Southern Natural Gas Company for 44 years as an oiler and substation superintendent in Reform, Muldon Storage Field in West Point, Miss. and Perryville Substation in Sterlington, La. He was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge # 172 and was a founding member of the Reform Civitan Club. He was a member of Pickens County High School Board, Reform Town Council and Baliff for Pickens County. Orman served Reform UMC, Christ UMC in West Point, Miss. and St. Andrew's UMC in Sterlington, La. in many positions. He loved sports and was a high school basketball referee and coached girl's summer softball. He followed the Alabama Crimson Tide teams for many years and was a member of the Southern Ramblers and Mississippi Bagos camping clubs.
As a son he honored his parents; as a husband, he loved his wife; as a father, he took his daughters to church and supported them in all their endeavors; as a granddaddy, he adored and encouraged; and as a friend, he remained loyal.
Orman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Agnes Jones Atkins; daughters, Cheryl Caraway (Steve) of Shreveport, La. and Gail Holland of Pensacola, Fla.; grandson, Dr. Jeffrey Caraway (Gina) of Fort Worth, Texas and granddaughters, Amy Albritton of Monroe, La. and Lindsey Powell of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Samantha Albritton, John Lofton and Lyla Caraway; and great-great grandson, Bentley Head. He was also a favorite and beloved uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Ada Key Atkins; brothers, Hillman, Donald and Verbon Atkins and sisters, Mildred Hudson and Fan KelIum.
Pallbearers will be Joe Atkins, Phil Atkins, Billy Bozeman, Jimmy Jones, Donnie Jones and Ronnie Townsend.
Honorary pallbearers are employees of Southern Natural /El Paso Gas Company.
The family requests all that memorials be made onIine to Alzheimer's of Central Alabama or Reform First United Methodist Church.
