Edythe O. Singleton began life in the rolling hills of Buffalo Valley, near Talihina, Oklahoma. She was born on July 16th to Florence and Robert Bruce.

Edythe was a bright child and always had a passion for learning. Despite the economic hardships of the Great Depression, as well as often having to travel several miles to school by foot or bus, Edythe eagerly sought every opportunity to pursue her education. At a time when completing the eighth grade was viewed as quite an achievement, her father encouraged her to attend high school in Talihina; which she did, graduating proudly in 1941.

That same year, she met her future husband, Neal Singleton, at a café in Talihina. Two years later, in 1943, after a brief stint working in an office at McClellan Field, in Sacramento, California, she went to Florida where Neal had been stationed by the Air Force, and they were married. A little over a year later, they welcomed their first child to the world – in the middle of a raging hurricane.

After World War II, Edythe and Neal returned to Oklahoma where their family continued to grow and she and Neal moved to several places including: Stigler, Oklahoma, Dyer, Arkansas, Roland, Oklahoma, Sallisaw, Oklahoma and Noel, Missouri. In 1962, they finally settled in Arkoma, Oklahoma, where Edythe continued to care for their family and worked for the newly-established Head Start Program. Additionally, she began to pursue her dream of earning a college degree by taking classes at Northeastern State University, finally graduating with her degree in Early Childhood Education in the year 1974.

During the 1970s and early ‘80s, Edythe taught kindergarten in Arkoma, and took great delight in sharing her days and knowledge with the young children in her class; taking time not only to help them learn how to hold a pencil or sing their ABC’s, but also helping them learn how to get along with one another and become better people. In this way, as well as many other acts of service, she and her husband Neal worked tirelessly to build and strengthen their community.

Edythe retired from teaching, but never stopped learning. The massive collection of books she leaves behind serve as a reminder of her keen intellect and inquisitive mind. Her legacy of faith, hope, and love for the Lord lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many lives she impacted during her time upon this earth.

She was united with her Savior and Lord on June 4, 2016 at an age that cannot be stated directly because she always told anyone who asked how old she was that, “A lady never reveals her age.” She was a loving daughter, kind sister, devoted wife and mother, tireless champion of education, and beloved child of the Almighty God. She will be missed greatly.

Edythe was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Florence Bruce, her husband of 53 years, Neal Singleton; two children, Donald Neal Singleton, Jr., and Lyn Singleton; three sisters, Glenn Roden, Lily Brunson, and Lila Bruce; as well as one brother, Tony Bruce.

She is survived by three children: Ann Williams, and husband, JL, of Spiro, Oklahoma, Bruce Singleton, and wife, Connie, of Cookson, Oklahoma and Sarah Singleton Spears, of Poteau, Oklahoma.

She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Audra (Williams) Shalles and husband, Scott, daughters, Evangelina and Sophia, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sabrina Dyer and husband, Jeremy, sons, Sean Miller and Jonathan Dyer, of Poteau, Oklahoma, Alisha Smedley and husband, Vance, daughter, Danika, of Poteau, Oklahoma, Gwen Sullivan and husband, John, daughter, Abigail, and son, Samuel, of Poteau, Oklahoma and Taylor Singleton of Addison, Texas.

Smith, Arkansas, Trish Anderson of Cookson, Oklahoma, Juanita Doubrava of Bixby, Oklahoma, and Violet Sue Williamson of Arkoma, Oklahoma.
