Ebb McClure
McCLURE, Ebb – Age 91, a longtime resident of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away July 3, 1997 at his home. He was born February 9, 1906 in Shooting Creek Township, Clay County, North Carolina, to parents, Theodore and Julia Ann (Coleman) McClure. Ebb was raised on three farms, where at seven years of age, he was herding sheep and cattle on horseback. His firs job came at the age of 16,. He carried star route mail on horseback and wagon. He was sworn into his new job by his own father. Ebb worked the mail route for about four years, earning $37.00 dollars a month, and covering 10 miles between Hayesville and Shooting Creek. Due to the harsh winters, it was rough doing at times. He had to deal with various postal matters on the trail, such as buying money orders for people, taking money for stamps and at times having to lick all the stamps. Ebb went to school at Shooting Creek to eighth grade, going six month on and six month off. Later on he began to work in logging. These were times when the oxen, rather than machines were used in the woods. He worked the logging camps till 1929, when the industry began a down turn, and there was a lack of jobs. He farmed for two years during the early depression from 1929 till 1931. Ebb was united in marriage to Amy Ledford on November 16, 1930 in Shooting Creek Township, North Carolina. He worked on various WPA dam projects including the Chatauga Dam and the Fontana Dam. He also worked for the TVA (Oakridge Dam) after the war began. In 1947 he moved to Cramerton Mills, North Carolina, where he lived for 8 ½ years. It later became Burlington Mills. In 1955 Ebb and the family moved from Belmont, North Carolina to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, where he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for four years. He later worked for Martin Box Company, and C&D Lumber until his retirement in 1965. Ebb enjoyed 32 years of retirement. He loved fishing, goldpanning, gardening, hunting and reading. He was loved very much by his family and friends, and will be greatly missed. Survivors include, his wife of 66 years, Amy Leomia McClure of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, children Jeannie Taylor of Myrtle Creek, Rebecca Hunsucker of Gastonia, North Carolina, Kenneth McClure of Myrtle Creek, Joyce Justice of Myrtle Creek, 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, ant three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Theodore and Julia McClure, Garnet McClure Narvel McClure, Bronce McClure, Neal McClure, Ben McClure and Mat Thomas. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, July 6, 1997 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Officiating will be Minister Dr. Marion McKee of the Myrtle Creek Church of Christ. Private interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Myrtle Creek.
