(From Memorial Pamphlet)

Gertrude Railsback, daughter of John H. and Elizabeth (Berger) Stoelzing, was born December 20, 1911 at Chanute, Kansas. She passed away Monday, April 25, 1994, at the Cedar Living Center in Oberlin, Kansas at the age of 82 years, four months and five days.
She was reared at Chanute, where she attended elementary school and high school. After graduating, Gertrude furthered her education at the Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia, Kansas. She later received her Master's Degree in education from Kansas University at Lawrence, Kansas.
Gertrude began her teaching career in 1934 as an English teacher at Minneapolis, Kansas. She joined the teaching staff at Decatur Community High School in Oberlin in 1941 and taught there 36 years, for a total of 43 years of teaching. At Oberlin she taught English, Journalism and Speech and Debate. The latter was probably her favorite assignment, and she gained state-wide respect and admiration for her Speech and Debate Teams. She retired from teaching in 1977, but continued to take an interest in the school and her former students. A highlight of her life was when she was inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Hall of Fame on May 8, 1993, at Sterling College.
On February 17, 1950, Gertrude married Cloyd Railsback in Oberlin where they made their home. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Gertrude was an active member of the community and her church for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Church Women; Business and Professional Women's Club; lifetime member of both the National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, Zeta Chapter; JCC Federated Club; Village Violets Garden Club and order of Eastern Star Chapter #106. She had also been honored by the Oberlin Board of Education with a life membership in the Decatur Community High School Alumni Association.
Survivors include three brothers-in-law and their wives, Gordon and Ethel Railsback of Oberlin, Edward and Florence Railsback of Buffalo, New York, and Russell and Mary Anne Railsback of Corvalis, Oregon; one sister-in-law and her husband, Olive and Walter Hafner of Herndon, Kansas; her cousins, Stanley Stoelzing of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Hilda Koehler of Topeka, Kansas; 23 nephews and nieces, whom she treated like her own grandchildren; and many friends.
Her parents; husband; and an infant sister predeceased her.

A memorial fund has been established in her name to the United Methodist Church in Oberlin.
