There where the finches and nightingales are warbling their sweetest melodies and where the plaintive voice of the cuckoo is heard in the land, we find the native home of Jr. Frank Lange. Viz: at Herste in Westphalia, where he was born October 6, 1843 the son of John Lange (born 1809, died August 20, 1856 at West Woods, IL) and Mary Lucking (born October 6, 1808 and died at Harvel, IL February 8, 1888). At the village of Hplerback near Dortmund our subject was united in marriage to his present life companion Johanna Christine born August 30, 1851 at Brockwede, Westephalia daughter of Henry Uppenbrink (born October 28, 1818 and died at Harvel April 18, 1896) and Fredericka Tubesink (born August 24, 1815 died at Hplerbeck September 1, 1877). The marriage ceremony took place September 26, 1873. Five years after this memorable event had occurred, which changed Miss Christine Uppenbrink's name to that of Mrs. Frank Lange, the couple came to America on the later ill famed steamer "Oder" landing in New York 1878 and ever afterward our subject followed farming on the fertile prairie land near Morrisonville and Harvel. By a prior marriage, Frank Lange became the father of

Mary Eliza born December 25, 1865 (Mrs. August Kallenberger)
Frederic born October 5, 1867
Louise born November 16, 1869
August Wilhelm born April 15, 1971 (died before the trip to USA)
Franz Diedrich Gustav christened May 18, 1873 and died August 13, 1873

whilst the present union has blessed the couple with
Caroline born August 15, 1875 (Mrs. C. Nack)
Minnie born November 26, 1879
Josephine born February 22, 1882
John Joseph born October 28, 1883
Frank Joseph born February 23, 1885
Henry born July 18, 1889
Frank Conrad born September 14, 1891
On Christmas Day 1900 Mrs. Frank Lange remounced the Lutheran faith and was formally received into the Catholic Church.

(Biographical Sketches of the Members of St. Raymond's Parish)

Further research has found that Franz Lange, son of Johann Lange and Anna Maria Luelking, first married Maria Luisa Friederica Henrietta Woltermann, daughter of Johann Friedrich Woltermann and Maria Eleonora Kraehe, in a civil ceremony on September 15, 1866 and a Catholic ceremony on September 23, 1866 in Aplerbeck, Westfalen, Prussia. They were the parents of five children with three surviving and traveling to live in the US with their father and stepmother. Luise apparently died of complications of childbirth and Frank then married Johanna Uppenbrink.

The family story has Frank and Johanna Lange having a child die on the voyage to America and the child being buried at sea.
