Mr. John Edwin Akridge, Jr, age 78, of Rome, Ga., passed away on May 2, 2016, at his residence.

He was born in Rome, Ga. on May 2, 1938. He was the son of the late Jack Akridge and Beatrice Akridge. He was also preceded in death by his sister Joan Akridge and brother Richard Akridge.

A graduate of Darlington School in 1956, Mr. Akridge attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1956 for a brief period before enlisting in the Navy. He spent over 30 years serving our country as he continued in the reserve program. His career took him down many different paths but spent the majority of his time with the Chattahoochee Brick Company, Universal Tile, Universal Plastics and finished out his career with Capitoline Products. He was a maintenance engineer by trade but could do anything he put his mind to.

His hobbies included golfing, snow skiing, and woodworking. He also enjoyed the time spent with all his lifelong friends that he made through the Navy. He had a very special place in his heart for those guys because they truly cared for each other.

He is survived by his children's mother, Mrs. Connie Akridge who loved him very much. Their children are Jean Akridge, John E. Akridge III, and Richard Akridge. Also, a very special friend who loved my father dearly and checked on him every single day, Elsie Bramlett. Daughter-in-law, Darlene Akridge, grandchildren, Ryan Akridge, Kelcey Akridge, Konnor Akridge, and Kenslee Akridge. His siblings, Tommy Akridge and his sister Sarah Akridge.

The family received friends at Good Shepherd Chapel in Rome, Georgia from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2016. Funeral service at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requested memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.
