Joseph "Joe" Murphy, 87, of 2526 Franks Drive died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Trimble County, Ky., the son of William and Effie Tingle Murphy. He had been a professional boxer as a young man, and once sparred with former world middleweight champion Ezzard Charles in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also once fought a semi-championship bout with Tommy Arden of Louisville, Ky. He was a former employee of the Oscar Meyer Co. and retired from Peter Hand Brewery in Chicago. He moved to the Canaan area and lived there from 1972 until 1997, when he moved to Madison. He was also a farmer and loved doing yard work.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Jean Murphy of Madison and Ardeta Lasch of Florida; three sisters, Maxine Schneider of Madison, Ruth Ginn of Bedford, Ky., and Doris Grabbe of Columbus; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise Mahoney Murphy, in 1998; two sisters, Anna Maude Ginn and Atha Pearl Bodewitz; six brothers, Bill, Jerry, Mike, Chester, Morris and Vernon Murphy; and one half brother, John Murphy.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Oakley Funeral Home in Milton, with burial in the Mahoney Burying Ground.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. Sunday until the service
