Bill Casstevens, 87, made his last downhill run on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. He was lifted into eternity with the support of his loving family, loyal friends, incredible Courtland Street neighbors, and an amazing team of caregivers. Throughout Bill's five-year battle with dementia, he never lost his courage, witty ways or fighting spirit. He will be dearly missed. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 2301 N. Sylvania Ave., Fort Worth. A celebration of shared memories, stories and friendship will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Greenwood-Arlington Chapel. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of choice . Bill was born on his family's farm in Mansfield on Dec. 24, 1928. He was a third-generation of Mansfield Casstevens, growing up with many relatives in what was once a small farming community. After graduating from Mansfield High School, Bill did a short stint in the army during the Korean War. Upon completing an associate degree in engineering, Bill became fascinated with land surveying. In the 1960s he became a licensed, registered land surveyor and started his own business which he ran successfully for almost 40 years. Bill often remarked that his profession was good to and for him. He married Pattye Casstevens in 1981, and they enjoyed many fun and meaningful years together. Bill's passion was snow skiing, and for over 20 years, he, Pattye, friends and family skied all over the U.S. and Canada. He was never happier than when on a pair of skis flying down a ski slope. Anyone who shared his love of skiing was instantly his kindred friend. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Alvy and Effie Casstevens; two brothers, Harold Casstevens and wife, Katherine, Burton Casstevens and wife, Winnie; two sisters, Ina Mae Wynn and husband, Doug, Mildred Reitz and husband, Joe; three nephews, Larry Casstevens, Ronnie Casstevens and Michael McWilliams. Bill's family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff and caregivers at Walnut Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care in Mansfield, the ER staff and Palliative Care Unit at Harris Methodist, downtown Fort Worth and Heart to Heart Hospice for their gentle, loving care embellished with compassion, respect and competence. Survivors: Bill is survived by his spouse, Pattye; daughters, Kimberly Baker and husband, Jesse, and Leigh Gilliland and husband, David; granddaughters, Jessica Baker and Lauren Baker; nephews, Gene Casstevens and wife, Denise, Brian Casstevens and wife, Jill; niece, Shari McWilliams; and along with six great-nieces and two great-nephews.
