Ilene Gabriel Edwards, age 104, of Abernethy Laurels, formerly of the Sherrills Ford community, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013. She was born January 18, 1909 in Catawba County to Dowd Lafayette and Etta Virginia Sherrill Gabriel. Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her loving husband, Norman, whom she married in 1938, and her brothers, Max, Bill and Johnny. She attended and was the 1927 valedictorian of Sherrills Ford School and was a 1930 graduate of Appalachian State University. Mrs. Edwards taught at Sherrills Ford School from 1930 to 1946, and retired from Cannon Mills in 1971.
A faithful member of Hopewell United Methodist Church and later Smyrna United Church of Christ, she served in many positions and taught sunday school for years.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by one sister, Polly Stutts; nephew, Tony Stutts and wife, Carol; and nieces, Billie Ann King and husband, Joe, and Macel Azar; several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at Spirit Place at Abernethy Laurels on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Chaplain Larry Bolick will officiate and the family will greet friends following the service.
Burial will follow at Smyrna United Church of Christ cemetery, Sherrills Ford Road, Catawba, NC.
