Death Notice from the Banner (Clanton, Alabama) for August 31, 1905:
"About six o'clock Tuesday evening Joe Johnson died from an overdose of morphine. Shortly before, he had been on the streets, in a rather despondent mood, and after returning to the Clanton Drug store he procured a bottle of morphine and before he could be prevented had swallowed a big dose. Every effort was made to neutralize the effects of the drug, but in vain, and he passed quietly away. Great sympathy is felt for Mrs. Johnson and the family. He was only 20 years of age."
