Firl Childress, age 79, of Raven, Virginia, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016 at his home.

He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Farley and Dora Short Childress.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired coal miner with 38 years of service. He was a member of UMWA Local #1760 Seaboard, Virginia and attended Webb’s Chapel.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Hill Childress; granddaughter, Vanessa Johnson; and son in law, Dennis Puckett.

Survivors are:

Daughter: Donna Puckett Childress of Raven, Virginia

Sons:
Michael Bostic and wife, Louise of Cedar Bluff, Virginia
Wendell Childress and wife, Imadean of Richlands, Virginia
Burley Childress of Raven, Virginia

Sister: Fern “Linda” Stern and husband, George of Nashville, TN
Brothers:
Ralph Childress of North Carolina
Edward Childress and wife, Gaye of Honaker, Virginia
Buford Childress of Seattle, Washington

Six Grandchildren; Five Great Grandchildren; and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Firl Childress will be conducted Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 1pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. James Dye, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Bobby Keith Hale, Bryant Justus, Bobby Hale, Steven Childress, Mickey Bostic, and Devon Grimmett. Friends may call after 6pm Tuesday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
