Doyle Frank Arave, 88, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Rocky Mountain Care Center in Clearfield, Utah. He had been in failing health, needing skilled nursing for nine months.

Doyle was born in Taylor, Idaho, on June 16, 1927, to Frank and Edith Arave. His parents owned the Taylor Store which served as the meeting place, visiting parlor and pool hall for the local families. He grew up with lots of folks around to visit with, and that is how he preferred to live the rest of his life.

Doyle left Taylor during his high school years to live with his oldest sister, Wanda, and her family in Portland, Ore. He worked in the military shipyard for two years, most of that as shift supervisor of men twice his age. Doyle served six months in the Army, was stationed in California before receiving an honorable discharge for asthma.

Doyle married the love of his life, Barbara Hanks, in 1947. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Three children were born to them: Michael Frank, Douglas H. and Wanda Jane. Doyle and Barbara lived in Shelley-Taylor area until they moved to the west side of Idaho Falls. They lived on Beverly Road for 17 years and made lifelong friends in the neighborhood.

In 1970, Doyle and Barbara bought Doyle's grandparent's home on 11th Street. They remodeled and modernized the old family home that was built in the early 1900s. Once again, they met new friends, and their home was the meeting place for all of Doyle's numerous relatives. When the large house was too much for them to keep up, they moved into Three Fountains Condos. When Jane moved back to Idaho Falls in 2005, Doyle and Barbara moved next door to Kris and Jane in a twin home on Madeline Drive. Doyle lived with Kris and Jane for three years before moving to Fairwinds Retirement Center.

Doyle worked for Challenge Creamery for over 30 years, delivering milk to businesses from Shelley to West Yellowstone. Doyle left Challenge to work for his old friend, Vern Kelsch, at the Saving Center stores. He worked there until his knees could no longer take the hard work. When Doyle turned 65, he started working for Avis, shuttling cars between airports. He loved driving and visiting so it was a perfect fit. Doyle worked for Avis for 20 years, retiring when he was 85!

One constant in Doyle's life was working at the Taylor Cemetery. His father was sexton for over 40 years, and then Doyle was caretaker for over 20 years. His pride of workmanship and attention to detail showed in the mowing, weeding and digging of graves. Barbara, all three of his children and even some of the grandkids helped him during mowing season.

Doyle loved baseball, playing and coaching. His Little League team won the city championship twice. Both Mike and Doug played for the teams. Doyle played softball until he was into his 40s; he even played on the same team as his son, Mike. Doyle loved watching the Yankees and the Atlanta Braves on TV.

Both Doyle and Barbara enjoyed traveling, they made many trips around most of the United States. In 1992, they drove across country to Washington, D.C., where Jane flew in and spent a week touring our nation's capital. They continued their trip along the southern part of America, enjoying the every mile of the drive.

Doyle is survived by his children, Michael (Jolene) of Layton, Utah, Douglas (Anita) of Kennewick, Wash., and Jane (Kris) of Meridian, Idaho; sister, Nel Scanlan of Westminster, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four older sisters and two brothers who died before Doyle was born. He is also preceded by a daughter-in-law, Laurie. Doyle outlived his wife and most of his friends. He is now reunited with his wife, Barbara, and buddies Vance Barnett, Vern Kelsch and John Gellings.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave. The family will visit with friends from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery with military rites by the Bonneville County Veterans Team.
