Minnie Carolina Hayen was the second of ten children born to John Detrich Hayen and Margaret Delana Manderson. She was born in August of 1886 in rural Hutchinson County, South Dakota. Minnie was married 3 times during her short life.

On 21 September 1907 in Milltown, Hutchinson County, South Dakota she married William George Stirling. George and Minnie moved to Lyman County, South Dakota and had 2 sons - Alex born in 1908, and William was born a few months after his father's death in 1915.

A few years later, Minnie married James Albert Pipes on March 10, 1919 in Pierre, Hughes county, South Dakota. James died in August of that year just 5 months after they were married and Minnie was again pregnant and a new widow. Their son James was born in early 1920.

A little over a year later Minnie married George Luther Jones on 26 September 1921 in Murdo, Jones county, South Dakota. Sadly, Minnie died barely two weeks later, on October 8, 1921 in Murdo, South Dakota leaving behind 3 young sons. Minnie was buried in Milltown, South Dakota near her first husband William and her younger sister Margaret who had died in 1907.

The 3 boys returned to Hutchinson County to be raised by family. The older boys, Alex and William were raised by their father's brother Walter Stirling and James was raised by Minnie's parents John and Margaret Hayen.
