WED, 05/11/2016 - Columbian Progress
85, Sierra Vista, Ariz.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on June 17, 2016, at Bunker Hill Cemetery for Mrs. Alma "Betty" Fortenberry, 85, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., formerly of Bunker Hill, who fulfilled her life-long dream of going home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 6.
She was born to George and Alma Louise Auffarth on June 17, 1930 in Baltimore, Md. She married her beloved husband, Ross C. Fortenberry, on July 11, 1953. Together they had two children, Sherie and Ross Jr. "Rusty." She was a proud Army wife, never met a stranger, called everyone "Sugar" and loved to talk about the Lord and brag about her family. She was a member of Bunker Hill Baptist Church while she lived in the Bunker Hill community.
After the death of her husband in 1986, she moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz., with her daughter and son-in-law. There she was an active member of the First Baptist Church, attended a weekly Bible study class and was part of the Women on Mission group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross C. Fortenberry; parents, George and Alma Louise Auffarth; sister, Ellen Hanson and brothers, Allen "Billy" Auffarth, the Rev. Robert "Bobby" Auffarth, George Auffarth and Philip Auffarth.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherie Quinn (John) of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; grandson, George "Bodie" Waldrop; granddaughter, Tara Norris (Jadi); five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; son, Ross "Rusty" Fortenberry Jr. (Pamela) of Pensacola, Fla.; granddaughter, Kimberly Harigel (Sheldon); grandsons, Philip Hamilton (Amy) and grandson, Daniel Hendricks (Michele); eight great grandchildren; sister, Audrey Bettleyon Ewell of Baltimore, Md.; brother, Richard "Dick" Auffarth of Baltimore, Md. and numerous treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (April 8, 2016):

Betty Fortenberry (aka Granny, the Cake Lady, the Candy Lady) realized her lifelong dream of being in the presence of her Lord on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.

Betty was one of God's rarest creatures — she knew how to love unconditionally and with a purity you only find in fairy tales. Everyone she met she called "sugar." She couldn't pass a baby in a store without telling the Momma how precious her child was. She loved watching little birds, especially in her son's backyard in California, and she loved seeing snow on the Huachucas. She handed out candy like every day was Halloween, just to see people smile. She was proud of being an Army wife and loved everywhere we lived. Her only vice was that she really loved junk food — fountain cokes, chicken nuggets, and ice cream with all the toppings were her favorites. (I hope they have them in heaven.)

She loved us, her family, with blind dedication and a passion that would make any Momma Bear envious. We were the best — the smartest, the best looking, the most competent, the kindest, the hardest working, the most talented — of all of God's creations, and if you didn't know that, all you had to do was ask her. Because of that love, because of who she was and how she lived her life, she shaped ours … generation after generation after generation. We loved her. We will always love her.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Sherie Quinn, of Sierra Vista, and her family: son-in-law, John Quinn; grandson, George (Bodie) Waldrop; granddaughter, Tara Quinn; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her son, Ross (Rusty) Fortenberry of Pensacola, Fla., and his family: daughter-in-law, Pam; granddaughter, Kimberly Harigel; grandson, Philip Hamilton; grandson, Daniel Hendricks; and eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister, Audrey Ewell and a brother, Dick Auffarth, both of Baltimore, Md.; and many treasured nieces and nephews. Last but certainly not least, she leaves behind her much loved long-haired chihuahua, Rooney.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2016, in the First Baptist Church of Sierra Vista, Ariz.
