Laurel Patricia Sicina Ralph, 66, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at CMC Main in Charlotte, NC. She was born on March 11, 1949 at the old Goshen Hospital in Goshen, NY to the late Charles W. and Gloria W. Sicina.

Laurel grew up in Arden, NY until age 10, then she moved to Central Valley, NY. She was a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School and attended Orange County Community College. July 1974 she married Richard B. Ralph of Newburgh, NY.

Laurel worked in a nursing program at Falkirk Psychiatric Hospital for many years, while in school and after.

She then moved to Connecticut with her husband and worked in Niantic at the Connecticut Correctional Facility. She became involved in a Harvard University Research Project and would attend classes at Harvard.

Laurel and her husband returned back to NY in 1976 and in 1978 she joined the NY State Dept of Corrections. She worked in Bedford Hills, Green Haven, Eastern, Fishkill and Mid-Orange. She also taught at Harriman Training Academy for 10 years. Many of these recruits made lifetime careers in corrections. She and her co-workers put over 9000 recruits into the department. She loved her position at the Academy and always said that teaching was her best attribute.

While at Mid-Orange, Laurel was the Vice-President of the Local Union. She also lobbied in Albany for better contacts and Union rights. She always had the time to help her fellow officers.

During that time she held her favorite position of all, Girl Scout Leader, for her daughter’s two very active troops.

In 2010 Laurel and Richard moved to Mooresville,NC. She began volunteering at local theatre groups and for nearly 5 years she became an avid volunteer at the Latta Plantation. She cherished her time at the old historic plantation and its idyllic grounds.

Laurel is pre deceased by her parents, her beloved brother John Sicina and her special Angel Brooke Kaylin Sicina.

Laurel is survived by her husband, Dick Ralph, they had been together nearly 50 years. Her daughters, Allyson Lovitch of Mahopac, NY and Amanda Brown(Bobby) of Mooresville, NC and her son, Daniel Ralph of Santa Monica, CA. Her grandchildren, Kylie Lovitch, Ethan Lovitch, Lucas Brown and Meryl Brown. She is also survived by brothers Jim Sicina of WA, Bill Sicina(Diane) of NY, nieces Shannon Herrin(Terry) of FL and Jennifer Moeller of NY, nephews Brady Sicina(Leigh) of VA, Michael Sicina(Jane) and Greg Sicina, both of NY. Grand nieces Chloe Anon, Charleigh Herrin, godsons Michael Rheel and Patrick O’Reilly. Laurel wanted to mention special friends, Helen O’Reilly, Larry & Jo Weiss, George & Susan Schwartzman, Gladys Ullman, Doug & Elaine McCombs and all her dear friends at the Latta Plantation.

A memorial service will be held at the Latta Plantation at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers any donations may be made in her honor directly to the Latta Plantation or to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
