Jasper was one of 22 persons who died in the "East Paris Train Wreck" which occurred on 26 December 1903 in Kent County, Michigan.

The wreck involved east- (#6) and west-bound (#5) trains on the Pere Marquette Railway. Cause was said to be a westbound stop signal which was blown out by strong winds. Staff tried to alert a nearby farmer - probably to restore the signal - but they were unable to prevent the crash. The crash killed a total of 22 people and injured 40.

The death certificate only says he was removed to Detroit and was black. Name spelled in one newspaper account as Hullem and death certificate has Hullm. Newspaper account said he was 59 years of age and from Detroit
