Ruth “Queenie” Gambs, 83, of North Platte, passed away April 28, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1932, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Jurgen and Jeannette Palmer Rasmussen. She graduated from Holy Child High School in Waukegan in 1950 and furthered her education at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, graduating with a degree in education in 1954.
Queenie was united in marriage to Richard Worden on Aug. 11, 1956, in Waukegan, Illinois. After his passing, she married Robert Gambs on April 26, 1975, in North Platte.
She was a longtime faithful member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte, teaching Sunday school and serving on the Vestry, Parish Life committee and Altar Guild. Ruth taught third grade for 20 years at Lincoln and Osgood schools in North Platte, retiring in 1997. She made many special friendships while teaching in North Platte and maintained those up to the time of her passing. As an avid bridge player, she never passed up an opportunity to play an afternoon game.
In 2003, Ruth helped launch the North Platte Bulletin newspaper. She managed subscriptions and assisted with advertising for more than 13 years.
Her family is what Queenie cherished most. She enjoyed annual trips into the North Woods (YOHO!) of Wisconsin and Milwaukee to spend time with her children, grandchildren, sisters, nieces and nephews. She was the biggest supporter of her children and absolutely adored her grandchildren. She always had a smile on her face, a funny story to tell and an ear to bend. Her sense of humor, quiet strength and grace will be missed so much by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Worden; husband, Robert Gambs; brother and sister-in-law, John and Phyllis Rasmussen; and stepson, Nicholas Gambs.
Survivors include her children, Ann (Kent) Worden Clements, of Lake Quivira, Kansas, James (Amy) Worden, of Omaha, Carol Worden Gambs, of North Platte, and John (Kori) Worden, of Omaha; grandchildren, John (Jennifer) Clements, of Lenexa, Kansas, Mary Grace Clements, of Seattle, Julia Clements, of Kansas City, Missouri, Katherine Worden, Michael Worden, John Worden, Isabella Worden and Sophia Worden, all of Omaha; great-grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Clements, of Lenexa, Kansas; sisters, Lainy (Karl) Plinke, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and Jean (Bill) Campbell, of Palm Harbor, Florida; brother-in-law, Nick (Maggie) Gambs, of Aurora, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Lois (Bill) Lazeration, of Necedah, Wisconsin, and Dolly Worden, of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
