David S. McCampbell enlisted as a 19 yr. old resident of New Haven, Washington Co., Ia. on July 3,1861 in Co. F, 5th Iowa Infantry. He was wounded in the right thigh on May 16,1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. He was admitted June 14,1863 to Jackson Hospital at Memphis Tn. with a gun shot wound to his right thigh. He returned to his regiment on July 27,1863. He re-enlisted and was re-mustered Jan.1,1864, was consolidated Aug.8,1864 and transferred Sept.18,1864 to Co. G, 5th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered out Aug.11,1865 at Nashville, Tn.
He Married Miss Elsie Elizabeth ? in 1866.
He filed for an invalid pension on Jan.19,1880 and received certificate # 205.513.
He was living in Pilot Rock, Oregon at the time of the 1887 reunion of the 5th Iowa. In 1897 he is listed as living at Valley, Oregon.
He died Jan.20,1898 in Douglas Co., Oregon. His 27 yr. old daughter Margaret E. Roberts filed for a minor's pension as guardian on March 16,1898 with application # 672.675 but no certificate was issued.
A headstone for his unmarked grave was provided on Aug.25,1902 and shipped to Yoncalla Cemetery, Douglas Co., Oregon.
