DAVENPORT — Gene W. Ahrens, 84, of Davenport, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016, at Bickford Cottage in Davenport. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Runge Mortuary, 838 E. Kimberly Road, Davenport. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by Davenport American Legion Post 26. Memorials can be made to Hand-in-Hand, Bettendorf.

Gene was born April 25, 1932, to Walter and Hazel Ahrens in Dixon, Iowa. After growing up on a farm, Gene joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1956 to 1960 during the Korean conflict and receiving several honorary medals. Gene met his loving wife, Gloria, and enjoyed 31 wonderful years together.

Gene worked as a machinist at Ralston Purina in Davenport and retired after 42 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, square dancing, playing the accordion and playing cards with family and friends. Gene was a member of American Legion Post 26 and Pheasants Forever.

He is survived by children, Ruth Ahrens (Manuel Azares), Lisa (Alex) Sanchez, Nikki (Derek) DeHay, John Ahrens, Terri (Michael) Morrissey, Andrea (Odis) DeLoach and Melinda (Kasey) Kelchner; stepchildren, James (Mary) Ames, Brenda (Daniel) Hull and Steven (Tammi) Ames; grandchildren, Eric Bennett, Ryan (Victoria) Bennett, Matthew Rhodes, Cameron Rhodes, Jenna Rhodes, Alissa Rhodes, Sara Ahrens, Sam Ames, Natalie Ames, Jacob Hull and Emily (Josh) Brooks; and great-grandchildren, Braylon Bennett.
