Robert Hunter McCrea was born in 1878 in Cork, Ireland. He had two sons and two daughters with Margaret Hutton. Robert was a schoolmaster who moved to England in about 1906. The family moved briefly to Kent, but settled in Derbyshire, when Robert was appointed to a teaching and school master post at Netherthorpe Grammar School in Staveley, a village in the District of South Lakeland in Cumbria, England. He died in 1956 in Derbyshire, England, at the age of 78.
