PATERNAL GRANDFATHER

I didn't know my grandfather, because he died long before I was born. I don't have any photographs of him.

EUGENE WALTER ABLES, SR., married ANNA LAURIE CHEADLE on October 13, 1885. They lived on a farm in Santa Maria, California for many years before moving with their family to Los Alamitos, California.

EUGENE and ANNA had nine children, born over a period of twenty-three years:

LEONARD CARL, ETHEL MAY, DICK HOLGATE, ORA ELLEN, GENEVA MAUREEN, HAROLD CHEADLE, BESSIE ELLEN, EUGENE WALTER, JR., and CYRIL LOUIS. They are all deceased.

Because my grandfather died in 1925, he was not alive to mourn the tragic death of his youngest child, CYRIL LOUIS ABLES, who was murdered east of Snohomish, Washington in 1939.

EUGENE'S widow, ANNA ABLES, died on December 8, 1942. Many family members were convinced she died of a broken heart, for she was never the same after the murder of her son.

Not too long after her son's death, a blood clot formed in one of her legs, and she had to have it amputated. She was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life. I know she must have missed my grandfather very much, for she truly needed his love, comfort and support in those last days of her life.
