ABSALOM BIRD PASSES AWAY
DEATH CALLED AGED VETERAN SUNDAY AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS
"Absalom Bird, a well-known and highly-respected citizen , died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Rush. No. 443 North Eleventh Street, Sunday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock, after an illness lasting about three weeks. Short funeral services will be held at the Rush home Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. N. Church, of the Cambridge First M.E. church after which the remains will be taken to Bethel, Noble county, about three miles west of Pleasant City, where additional services will be held and the interment made.
The news of the death of Mr. Bird, while not expected, came as a great shock to his large circle of friends. During the past four years Mr. and Mrs. Bird had been making their home with their daughter Mrs. Rush and family, and during that time he made many warm friends. Although advanced in years, he was quite active and was seldom content to remain at home, during the pleasant weather.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Bird is survived by three sons as follows: Dr. Frank Bird, of Lore City, Dr. Fred Bird, of Athens county, and Austin Bird, living on the old Bird homestead at Bethel. The two first-named sons are physicians and were in almost constant attendance on their father during his illness. One sister, Mrs. W. H. H. Bonnell, of this city, and one brother James Bird, of Jasper county, Mo., are also left to mourn his death.
Deceased was born on the Bird homestead at Bethel, Noble county, April 24th, 1834. He grew to manhood there and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted, serving the entire four years. He was a devoted Christian, having been a member of the M.E. Church since early boyhood, and when he came to this city with his wife almost four years ago, became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church, where he was a constant attendant, except when prevented by illness. He was also a member of the Cumberland, (O.) G.A.R. Post."
