U.S. GRANT KEITH OF HOPKINTON DIED SAT. AFTER LONG ILLNESS
U. S. Grant Keith, 81, a lifelong resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home in Hopkinton Saturday evening, Aug. 31, following several months' illness. A son of Benjamin and Sarah Donford Keith, and the last of a family of eleven children, he was born on a farm north of Buck Creek in Union township, Delaware county, Jan. 29, 1865, and spent his early life on the farm. He attended the public schools and Lenox college. When a young man he learned the trade of blacksmith and followed that profession for many years. He married Cora Byam, March 8, 1893, and they spent all of their married life in Hopkinton. He served as rural mail carrier for 24 years, retiring in 1930. He was also a musician and possessed a fine tenor voice, a talent which he freely gave to the community, and was always in demand for special occasions.
He was a member of the, Presbyterian church, Modern Woodmen, Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star. Surviving are his wife and three children: Seward Clay Keith, Jessie Keith, both of Hopkinton, and Mrs. Eva Royden, Scotch Grove; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Rev. F. E. Allen officiated. Burial was in the Hopkinton cemetery.
