Solomon Miller

Solomon Miller died at his home in St. Johnsville Tuesday, aged 84 years. He was born in Minden, and resided there until 1868, successfully conducting a farm on the road leading north from Minden postoffice. He was the son of Henry Miller, (who died in Minden, Dec. 3d, 1833), and his wife, Elizabeth Zoller, and was the last survivor of a family of six. Since his removal to St. Johnsville, in 1868, he had been one of the most prominent figures in the place. As one of the directors of the St. Johnsville National bank, he had been an active factor in the financial prosperity of the place. He was prominent in the measures which resulted in the establishment of Roth & Englehardt's piano action factory. He also assisted in giving an impetus to the knit goods business in its first stages. For some years he had extensive interests at Palatine Church but within the last year had disposed of the paper board, saw and grist mills there, retaining possession of the farm. In politics he was a radical Republican, and was long a representative of St. Johnsville on the Republican county committee, while his face has been a familiar sight in Republican county conventions for the past forty years. In religious matters his views were in accordance with the Universalist theology. He had survived his wife, who was Elizabeth, daughter of John Wilson, of Minden, for many years. No children survive. Mr. Miller's health had given his friends and his physicians anxiety for many years, but his sturdy vitality opposed strenuous resistance to the inroads made on his frame by disease and infirmity. For nearly a week the end had been almost momentarily expected, and during the last eighteen hours it could hardly be said that he exhibited more than the lingering remains of vitality. He had passed beyond suffering, and simply existed. At last the supreme moment came, and one of the citizens of the place whose name had in popular estimation been long identified with St. Johnsville had answered to the roll call on the farther shore. The funeral services will be held at the late residence, Saturday at 11 a.m., Rev. Arnold S. Yantis, of Fort Plain, officiating. His nearest surviving relatives are the children of his late brother, Jonas Miller, of Minden, who died in 1896 (Miss Miller, and Mrs. O.W. Fox of St. Johnsville, and Alton Miller of Minden) and the children and grandchildren of his older brother, Henry, who died in Danube, April, 1868.
