Marian Bell 1923 - 2001

Marian B. Bell, age 77, of Ida Grove, Iowa, and formerly of Danbury, Iowa, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. The Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove is in charge of professional arrangements.

Born October 12, 1923, in Battle Creek, Iowa, Marian was the daughter of Harvey H. and Marie (Meyer) Shoning. She grew up and received her education in the Danbury area and was united in marriage to Lester C. Bell on June 1, 1939, in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Danbury where they raised their family of nine children. In addition to her duties as wife and mother, Marian also cleaned, painted, and wallpapered many homes in and around Danbury, and she later worked as a certified nurse's aide at Hartley Memorial Hospital and Willow Dale Nursing Home in Battle Creek.

Marian was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

Marian had a caring nature and enjoyed giving her time to help people. In the early 1980's, the State of Iowa honored her with the Volunteer of the Year award.

Survivors include nine children and their spouses, Nancy and Geary Peterson of Roseville, California, Judy and LeRoy Schimmer of Ida Grove, Connie Wayson, Kathie and Walter Mayou of Willow Park, Texas, Lester "Butch" and Marsha Bell of Mapleton, Tom and Peggy Bell of Ida Grove, Patty and Ron Powell of Champlin, Minnesota, Robert Bell of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Joe and Kathy Bell of Indianola, Iowa; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and 1 sister and her husband, LaVerne and Wallace Stein of Havanna, North Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Louise Kee and Christina and Ella Mae in infancy; four brothers, Emil, Elmer, Don, and Harvey Shoning; and one granddaughter, Sherry Peterson.
