Alma Whitley Adcock died Saturday April 2, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born 11 April 1928 in Enfield, N.C. and was the daughter of Nubron B. Whitley and Della Draper. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William F. Adcock Jr. and her sister LaRue Sparks.

Mrs. Adcock graduated from Enfield High School and East Carolina University. She taught music in Farmville, NC and Wichita, Kansas schools before moving to Wilmington where she continued teaching until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she sang in the Chancel Choir for 30 years, and for many years directed the Children’s Choir and Youth Hand Bell Choir.

Mrs. Adcock was a dedicated member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs beginning with her membership in the N. C. Jr Sorosis where she served in many capacities including president. During her tenure as Historian she wrote the 25-year history of the club and completed the 75-year history in 2003. In 1964, she helped organize the Wilmington Woman’s Club. She was an active member serving three terms as president and several years as chairman of the fundraisers, Broadway Brochure and the Coastal Living Show. She compiled the history of that club in 2002 and later continued it through the 50-year anniversary in 2014. Both histories are available in the North Carolina Room in the public library. The club honored her work in 1985 with an Honorary Life Membership in the GFWC-NC.

She was an amateur genealogist and was a charter member of the Order of First Families of North Carolina, The Ancient Planter Society of Virginia, and a member of the Jamestowne Society. She enjoyed helping her family and friends in their search for ancestors.

Mrs. Adcock is survived by her brother Dale Whitley (Linda) of Tarboro, NC, daughters Jennifer Whiting (Jeff) of Wilmington, Laura Bashaw (Stan) of Cary, NC and Linda (Farrow) Adcock of Wilmington, grandchildren April and Jenny Whiting, Katy and Will Bashaw, Adam and Stuart Farrow and 5 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 9th at 2pm followed by visitation with the family in the Fellowship Hall.
