The inscription reads:
"Erected in memory of Deacon Joseph Hall who departed this life April (the) 18th AD 1784 in (the) 77th year of his age. Through his life he was a pattern of hospitality. His hope was founded in Jesus and his confidence in God."

The inscription on the bottom is difficult to read:
"Hear you this sound, alarming sound
Prepare to meet your fate.
Death that....
....at the gate."
