Daniel was born in the village of Vuren, the 2nd of six (or eight*) children of Jan van der Linden and Willemke de Raden. His siblings: Lucas, Leendert, Johannes, Arie*, Nikolaas, Johanna Adriana and Jan*.

On May 19, 1849, Daniel married Aaltje Walraven, daughter of Jan Walraven and Jantje Willemstijn at Vuren.

Children: Jan; Hermanus (dy); William Daniel; and Jantje (Jennie).

Their children: Jan (b 1850) and Hermanus (b 1852, dy) both born in Vuren before 1853 when the family came to America. After settling into farming at Lake Prairie township near Pella, they had two more children: William (b 1860) and Jantje (b 1869).

Both Federal and State census records from 1856 through 1905 show Daniel and his family living in Lake Prairie township. In the 1856 state CR, it shows Daniel's parents living next door to him, Aaltje and 6-year-old Jan. The 1860 CR shows them still in Lake Prairie but living in her parent's home. (It's possible they moved there because she was about to have a child.)

The 1870 CR shows their son Jan working on the farm with his father. They are living next door to the Maarte Walraven family. This could have been Aaltje's brother (there's a "Marten" in the 1860 census).

The 1880 CR record shows that Daniel is widowed*. He is farming with his son, William, 19 and daughter Jane, 11, is also in the household. The 1895 State CR shows him living in Pella. The 1900 CR shows him living in the home of his son, William and his family and that he can read and write, but that he did not speak English, however the 1910 CR says that he did speak English. In 1910, he is still living with his son.

*Notes:
• Arie and Jan and their place in the birth order were found in Ancestry trees but could not be documented in Dutch records we found.
• According to Dutch death records, Aaltje died 12 May 1872.
