Vera Cole Ruffin, wife of Samuel James "Jimmy" Ruffin, died Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at her residence.
Mrs. Ruffin was born April 19, 1924, in Turbeville, SC, a daughter of John Gilbert Cole and Eunice Rush Cole.
She graduated from Turbeville High School and Malboro Business College. After graduation, she began her professional career at the Charleston Naval Ship Yard, followed by the Manning Courthouse, where she met her future husband, and then the Olanta Citizens Bank.
Vera and Jimmy were married April 8, 1949. In 1954, they moved to Andrews to open Ruffin’s Department Store. In 1964, she began working as the Head Teller for South Carolina National Bank. After 25 years of service, she retired in 1989 as the Assistant Branch Manager.
She was a member of Andrews First Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, spent many hours playing the piano for Sunday School, Sunday Worship services, and Wednesday evening prayer meeting. She sang in the Chancel Choir and was the assistant Church Treasurer.
She was survived by husband of 66 years; two children, Ginger R. (Mike) Altman and Jim Ruffin; two grandchildren, Ryan Altman and Marianne A. (Ryan) Jordan; a great-granddaughter, Henley Jordan; and a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Cole.
She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Julian Cole and John Cole.
Funeral services were Friday, April 1, 2016, in Andrews First Baptist Church. Burial, directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, followed in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.
