NOVEMBER 27, 1929-NOVEMBER 26, 2014
John Hines Tynan, Sr. born November 27, 1929, died peacefully Wednesday, November 26, 2014, one day before his 87th birthday. John grew up in San Antonio and attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and Alamo Heights High School. John was a class officer every year of HS and president of the class of 1944 his junior and senior years. At 17, John enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as a second lieutenant. While waiting for deployment, John attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. John began his Air Force career as a general's aide in Washington D.C. After that tour of duty, John requested to be stationed in Alaska where he served as a pilot and radio operator. On his free time, John flew to various Alaskan islands where he camped and took wildlife photos. John went on to use his GI bill to complete his education at the University of Colorado, Boulder where he obtained a degree in International Business. After graduation in 1950, John returned to San Antonio to work for his father, Leo Castillo Tynan, Sr., at the Tynan Brokerage Company. John was promoted to Senior Sales Representative early in his career and 1969, John was transferred to the Philadelphia office where he created advertising and wrote articles regarding the scientific uses of the medications currently being developed by the company. Upon retirement, John full-filled his dream of becoming a "country boy" and designed and built his home of over 30 years in Canyon Lake, Texas. The home utilized the most current energy efficient materials of the time and was situated on an angle on the property to shield one side of the house from the Texas sun. John had many talents. In his youth, not only did John enjoy the outdoors, but John was recognized as a marksman, ice skater, outstanding dancer and track enthusiast. John was also an amateur painter, played violin and sang and played guitar. With the arrival of the space age in the 1960's, John became an amateur astronomer, owning his own telescope and tracking the planets and stars and sharing astrological events with his four children. John was also an avid sailor. His grandfather, John Hines, taught him to sail on the Chesapeake Bay where the family spent their summers growing up. John learned to navigate his sail boat using the stars and taught classes on the subject for the San Antonio Sailing Club. John raced sail boats on Canyon Lake for many years. He also served as an officer of the SA Yacht Club. John maintained an avid interest in science his whole life, reading and researching scientific topics from the oceans to space. John also spent part of his retirement years writing a book about his extraordinary life experiences. John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Agnes Roberts Tynan, sister, Katherine Elizabeth Tynan, daughters Cynthia Carey Tynan and Elizabeth Kaye Tynan Vinson and grandchildren, Garrett Tynan Vinson and Johanna Kathryn Vinson, and step daughter, Susan Sheldon.
