Husband of Sarah Catherine (Williams) English and son of Rev. Sampson J. English and Frances (Hardison) English.

Enlisted May 15, 1862 in Company D of the 11th Battalion Georgia Artillery (Sumter Flying Artillery) in Americus, GA. Company D was disbanded on October 4, 1862, and he was transferred to Company A. Last rolls (Jan-Feb 1865) shows him present with his battery.

Admitted to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, VA April 15 with pneumonia, returned to duty April 22, 1865. 1898 Confederate pension application showed physicians affidavit stating that his left hand was partially disabled from injury received in battle at Gettysburg.
