Builder of the Los Angeles Terminal Railway in 1887, and later President of the Vallejo, Benicia, and Napa Valley Railroad Company. During the Civil War, he joined the United States Calvary in 1862, and rose to the rank of captain within a year. He served the duration of the war, and then built the street railway systems in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Lexington, Kentucky. He came to Los Angeles in 1886, and built the street railway system of Santa Barbara, and the Los Angeles and Glendale railroad. He also served on the board of park commissioners for the City of Los Angeles. From his obituary in the Los Angeles Herald, Aug. 6, 1911:

"Railroad Builder And Pioneer Dies:
Captain John Cross, Who Established Salt Lake Railroad, Passes Away At 70:

In the death of Captain John Cross yesterday at his home, 339 Loma Drive, one of the pioneer railroad builders and prominent men of the west passed away. Captain Cross was 70 years old and was interested in plans for a new short line to San Francisco, almost up to the hour of his death. He had lived in California the last 30 years and established what is now the Salt Lake railroad in Los Angeles, known as the Terminal railroad of earlier days, which has been gradually extended into the railroad it now is. Before coming to California, Captain Cross promoted and built railroads in Kentucky and Arkansas. Captain Cross is survived by his wife and one nephew, Albert P. Cross of this city. Funeral services will be held at the family home Monday at 2 pm, burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Both funeral service and burial will be strictly private."
