Dallas Morning News, The (TX) - Thursday, July 16, 1998
A memorial service for Munir Bayoud, a retired Southern Methodist University math professor and co-founder of the American Arab Society, will be held at noon Thursday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mr. Bayoud died Sunday at RHD Memorial Medical Center. He was 86.
The native of Lebanon received his bachelor's degree in math from the American University of Beirut in 1932. He taught at the school while studying for a master's in math. He later taught at the Orthodox High School in Jaffa and at St. George's College in Jerusalem. He worked as a labor inspector for the British government and for a petroleum company owned by Britain and Iraq.

Mr. Bayoud came to the United States in 1955 and joined the faculty of SMU two years later. In Dallas, he co-founded the American Arab Society and directed the Arab League of States' regional office. He also served as national president of the Chicago-based United Holy Land Fund, an organization established in 1968 to give humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees.

"He loved the Palestinians and grew to know them very well from the time he spent there," said his wife, Katie Bayoud of Irving. "Ever since then, he's been sympathetic to their cause."
Mr. Bayoud retired from SMU in 1978 and continued his humanitarian work.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Linnette Louie of Martinez, Ga., and Randa Snyder of Dallas; a son, Bruce Bayoud of Houston; sisters Sumaya Nicolau of Brazil and Wadad Ghassib of Jordan; and three grandchildren.
