Lydia Marie Powell was born at home to Henry and Maria Christine (Beidien) Blitz at 442 "A" Street, Lincoln, Nebraska on February 23, 1916 and died at Aurora, Nebraska on May 31, 2006, at the age of 90.

She was a graduate of the 1934 Class of Lincoln High School.

Lydia was baptized and confirmed at Zion Congregational Church 9th & "D" Streets, Lincoln, NE. She was a 59-year member of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Aurora.

On December 26, 1940, she was united in marriage to E. Harold Powell at Lincoln, Nebraska. Harold passed away on March 3, 1988.

Lydia was a dedicated volunteer. She volunteered at the Federated Church Women's Association, Sunday school teacher, Courtesy Committee and Church Council. Lydia also gave her time to the Merry Janes, Chairman of Aurora March of Dimes, Red Cross Blood Mobile, Chairman of the Cancer Drive, Legion Auxiliary (Child Welfare), First Head Start Teacher in Aurora, Scout Den Mother and Brownie/Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of the Aurora Library Board, Charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Hamilton Manor Auxiliary and a Hospice Volunteer.

Lydia was known for her love of family, faith in God and baking for others. Great-grandchildren were a special delight. Her faith in God was demonstrated by her daily devotional readings with her Bible always close at hand. Lydia came from a family who loved to cook – pies and cookies were her specialty with the smell of freshly baked goods often filling her kitchen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; brothers, Peter, Reinhold, Leo, Rudolph, Robert and Henry; sisters, Marie, Emma, Pauline and Esther.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are her four children, Ernie (Karen) Powell of Fort Collins, CO, Jim Powell of Lincoln, Mary (Roger) Holling of Aurora and Mike (Deanna) Powell of Aurora; 11 grandchildren, Robert (Tracie) Powell, Kathy Depperschmidt, Beth (Brian) Terry, Joe, Sarah and Tom Powell, Michelle (David) Woodside, Marc Erickson, Chrissy (Aaron) Hough, Jon Powell and Debby Powell; 9 great-grandchildren, Cory, Daniel and Kevin Powell, Megan Depperschmidt, Nathanael and Howie Terry, Gavin Powell and Owen Woodside. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Dr. Richard) Pitsch of Seward and many nieces and nephews.
