Switchman Killed by Cars
From the Peoria Star of March 15th we take the following account of the horrifying death of CM Gladfelter, a brother of George Gladfelter of this place:
"CM Gladfelter, aged fifty years, employed as a switchman for the C.R.I.&P. railway, met his death at 3:15 o'clock this morning in the railway yards at the foot of Wayne Street, when he was run over by a cut of freight card. Following his death, Coroner Eckard was called and the inquest will be held this afternoon.
"Gladfelter made his home at 1110 Charlton street. He is survived by one son, William Gladfelter, a cigar maker living at Mendota. One brother survives-George Gladefelter, a farmer living near Princeville.
"Gladfelter was sent by the foreman of the switching crew to the end of a cut of cars to flag any train or engine that might be coming down on the same track. While at the end of the cars the cut began moving and in some manner he was caught uner the wheels before he could get clear of the track. When found a few minutes later by Frank McHenry, another switchman, the body was horribly mangle, both legs being severed.
Funeral services were conducted from the Winzeler undertaking rooms in Peoria MOnday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the interment was in Springdale cemetery, near that city. The large concourse of friends who paid their last tribute of respect by their presence at the funeral and burial was an attest of the esteem in which the dexeased was held in Peoria, where he had resided for a number of years.
